Great advice here from fraudster-turned-FBI-agent Frank Abagnale about using a credit card vs. a debit card. The advice is probably too extreme, “Don’t ever ever ever ever ever use a debit card,” but does highlight the perils of debit cards and the safety of credit cards.
My own compromise approach is to always keep nearly zero funds in the checking account linked to my debit card. So that if it is ever stolen, thieves can’t take much. Also, I only use debit cards to pull cash out of reputable ATM boxes–and never for just purchases at physical stores or online.
